Le Mans hypercar from Sochaux – tech carrier and design statement

This model is based on the Peugeot 9X8, a Le Mans Hypercar built to FIA‑WEC rules. The line belongs to the first generation of the 9X8 and has been used since 2022. The Peugeot 9X8 ties back to the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP, which Peugeot raced in LMP1 between 2007 and 2011. Unlike its predecessor, the Peugeot 9X8 uses a hybrid setup and was designed by the team around Matthias Hossann in close cooperation with technical director Olivier Jansonnie. A standout feature in the early years was the aero package without a conventional rear wing; downforce balance was created via the underbody, diffuser and body flanks. With the 2024 evolution, the Peugeot 9X8 received a slim rear wing as part of Balance-of-Performance adjustments. The body follows current LMH rules with an allowed minimum weight of around 1030 kg (2,271 pounds) and a length just under five meters (about 16.4 feet). Jean-Marc Finot oversaw the project coordination for the lighting signature and air intakes as part of Stellantis motorsport management.

Hybrid powertrain, all‑wheel logic and suspension details

The Peugeot 9X8 runs a 2.6‑liter (158.7 cubic inches) V6 biturbo with a 90‑degree bank angle. The combustion engine drives the rear axle and produces — within BoP limits — roughly 500 kW (about 670.5 horsepower). A 200 kW (about 268.2 horsepower) motor‑generator unit (MGU) sits on the front axle. Total drivetrain output is capped by the regulations at 500 kW (about 670.5 horsepower); the control unit scales back the V6 output depending on how much the electric motor is used. Energy storage is handled by a high‑voltage system around 900 volts, developed together with the group’s energy partner TotalEnergies. The all‑wheel mode on the Peugeot 9X8 only activates above certain speeds to comply with ride‑height and traction rules. Gear changes go through a sequential seven‑speed gearbox, and the brakes are carbon‑reinforced discs with front brake‑by‑wire. The chassis is a carbon‑fibre monocoque with double wishbones; the aero works closely with the lighting units: the vertical LED signature in the headlights is faithfully reproduced and defines the Peugeot 9X8 along with the flat intakes and long front splitter.

Competition appearances and results in the FIA WEC

The Peugeot 9X8 debuted in the second half of the 2022 FIA World Endurance Championship season. After initial shakedowns the program made clear progress in 2023. Notable appearances include the 24‑hour race at Le Mans, where the Peugeot 9X8 ran in the top positions for long stretches and even led laps. A tangible result came at the WEC round in Monza, where the team scored podium points. In the following years, the aero evolution brought more consistency over race distance. Drivers who’ve piloted the Peugeot 9X8 include Loïc Duval, Gustavo Menezes, Nico Müller, Paul di Resta, Jean‑Éric Vergne, Mikkel Jensen and, at times in 2023/24, Stoffel Vandoorne. The team runs different energy release strategies depending on track, which shows up in varying stint lengths and pit stop cycles.

Racing program, team structure and sponsors

Peugeot Sport runs the Peugeot 9X8 with two entries across the full WEC season. The cars are part of a factory program that taps into development centers in Satory and Montigny‑le‑Bretonneux. The team structure mixes series engineering staff with racing specialists; there’s a strong focus on software and energy recovery. Prominent brands on the livery include Michelin as tyre partner, Yahoo! on the front fenders, Capgemini on the bonnet and Marelli on the sidepods; the energy partnership with TotalEnergies influences the systems engineering. The photos of the model clearly show the WEC and “HY” hybrid class markings. Those graphics, together with race number 93 and the “Hypercar” designation, identify the car as an LMH entry. The Peugeot 9X8 was consciously developed as a technology carrier to test aero and energy management in a regulated environment and to transfer learnings to future production projects.

The 1/18 model from SPARK in the AudiSport collection

The model shown here is a 1/18 scale piece from SPARK and is part of the collection of the Modelly member “AudiSport”. The miniature recreates the Peugeot 9X8 very accurately: the front with its deep splitter, the angular light signature and the small aero fins are cleanly reproduced. The visible material mix — a combination of resin, plastic and finely applied photo‑etched parts — gives crisp edges, sharp air intakes and a realistic carbon weave on the lip and diffuser. The wheels match the real car with a central lock; the tyre shoulders show the blue Michelin markings and compound identification. The paint follows the known launch/WEC design: grey and white panels with dot‑fade patterns broken up by bright lime accents. Logos from Yahoo!, Capgemini, TotalEnergies and Marelli are clearly legible; the number 93 and the “Hypercar” graphics sit on the sidepod. Even the tiny antennas, roof air intake and side fin structure are well done. This 1/18 model from SPARK captures the character of the Peugeot 9X8 and — thanks to SPARK’s usual material mix — is sturdy enough for a display case while detailed enough for close‑ups.
