The Volkswagen T1 is probably one of the most famous and beloved vehicles in automotive history. Built from 1950 to 1967, the T1 was the first generation of the Volkswagen Transporter (also known as the Type 2) following the Volkswagen Type 1, better known as the Beetle. The T1 was designed by esteemed engineers like Heinrich Nordhoff and Ben Pon. With its distinctive design and versatility, it served as a delivery van, minibus, camper, and even an ambulance.
The Volkswagen T1 was equipped with an air-cooled 1.2 to 1.5-liter boxer engine, initially producing only 25 horsepower. It featured a four-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. Noteworthy was the very accessible engine compartment design, simplifying repairs and maintenance. The driving characteristics of the T1 were quite impressive for its time, especially in terms of comfort and everyday usability. Other technical highlights included the independent front suspension and the torsion bar strut at the rear axle, ensuring remarkable stability.
The distinctive two-window design and split windshield are characteristic features of the Volkswagen T1. The sleek shaping and the iconic 'V' logo on the front make it unmistakable worldwide. Over the production years, various special editions and color variations were offered, ranging from simple single-color paint jobs to colorful two-tone combinations. Another interesting detail was the spacious cargo area, easily accessible through the large rear hatch, further enhancing the practicality of the T1.
Now we get to the highlight of the day: the 1/64 scale model of the Volkswagen T1, manufactured by M2 Machines. This model from Modelly member "Chris's" collection stands out with its detailed and colorful design. The standout feature is the special paint job in a vibrant purple, combined with unique flame designs in orange and blue adorning the roof and sides of the model. The large silver rims and chrome details like the 'Jan & Dean’s Kustom City' logo on the sides give the model a distinctive look.
