The ZIL-4331 is a medium-duty truck began to be developed back in the second half of the 1970s as a replacement for the ZIL-130 model. The design work was completed by 1985, and the car got on the conveyor only in 1987, while the "one hundred and thirty" model also remained in the production range of the enterprise.

By its design, the ZIL-4331 was a deeply modernized ZIL-130, but with a completely new angular cabin. The carrying capacity of the machine was six tons.

Initially, it was supposed to equip the truck with a new atmospheric eight-cylinder ZIL-645 diesel engine with a volume of 8.7 liters and a power of 185 hp. s., however, the car was put into mass production with the old ZIL-508 eight-cylinder gasoline engine (6.0 liters, 150 hp), and only a small part of the cars were equipped with didels. In the nineties, they tried to install MMZ-D-245 and Caterpillar diesel engines on the ZIL-4331, but these projects did not receive further development.

The ZIL-4331 model was produced in various versions: a “bare” chassis, a flatbed truck, there were options for a cab with a berth, cars with an elongated frame.

In the 2000s, the volume of truck production at ZIL fell to a minimum, and in 2014 the plant finally stopped producing cars.
