Prototype: GT‑R R35 and the 35GT‑RR VER.2 bodykit

This little model is based on the tuned sports car Nissan 35GT‑RR VER.2, which itself is built on the production Nissan GT‑R (R35). The R35 has been in production since 2007 and replaced the Skyline GT‑R R34 as Nissan’s tech flagship. At its heart is the 3.8‑liter (1.0 US gallon) V6 VR38DETT with twin turbocharging — the early version made 353 kW (≈473 hp) / 480 PS (≈474 hp) and later upgrades went up to 441 kW (≈592 hp) / 600 PS (≈592 hp) in the NISMO. Power is sent through a rear‑mounted 6‑speed dual‑clutch transmission (GR6) in a transaxle layout. The electronic all‑wheel system ATTESA E‑TS varies torque between front and rear. The chassis mixes aluminium, steel and composites, and uses double wishbones up front and a multi‑link setup at the rear. The engineering team included Kazutoshi Mizuno, design chief Shiro Nakamura and later product lead Hiroshi Tamura. The Nissan 35GT‑RR VER.2 builds on this kit and adds race‑looking aerodynamics to make a street‑legal show/track car.

Tuner and aerodynamics: Liberty Walk 35GT‑RR VER.2

The widebody, big air intakes, hood vents and chunky rear wing you can see come from the Japanese tuner Liberty Walk. The company was founded in 1996 by Wataru Kato in Nagoya/Aichi and is famous for its bold, race‑inspired styling. The bodywork on the Nissan 35GT‑RR VER.2 is part of the LB‑Silhouette Works line and differs from the classic LB‑Works look by using integrated flares instead of exposed rivets. Typical bits are a deep front splitter, a redesigned main intake, side canards, rocker extensions, a modified rear bumper with diffuser and that big rear wing; the build often pairs with a race‑style exhaust layout. These parts aim for more downforce and a dramatic look. Mechanically the Nissan 35GT‑RR VER.2 usually stays close to stock, but many owners add bigger intercoolers, upgraded exhausts and ECU tuning to get more out of the VR38DETT. For context, the previous GT‑R generation, the Skyline GT‑R R34, was sold until 2002 — the R35 marked a clear tech jump with a V‑engine and dual‑clutch gearbox.

Fred’s 1/64 scale model: modified Hot Wheels custom

The piece shown is from collector Fred and is a 1/64 scale model from Hot Wheels. Important for collectors: it’s a modified miniature, not the factory product. The base toy is die‑cast metal and was customized afterwards. The photos show a light grey paint with black side stripes, white roundels on the doors and readable “LIBERTY WALK” logos on the fenders and rear sides. At the front there’s a thin red frame around the intake and a small “R” badge. The intake lets you see a silver‑coloured intercooler. The hood has two long vents plus a center opening, echoing the real Nissan 35GT‑RR VER.2. The body has low skirts, a lip spoiler and widened arches. At the rear you can spot four exhaust tips as a separate insert, and above them the classic round R35 taillights. White five‑spoke wheels with tire lettering “YOKOHAMA” and “ADVAN” plus a clear lowered ride height define the side view. Japanese plates ending in 668 are on the front and back. Windows and interior are slightly tinted; mirrors, light inserts and the spoiler look like separate parts. Again: this is a custom job by Fred, so it’s an individually finished take and not the stock Hot Wheels release.

Details, build quality and collector notes in 1/64 scale

For collectors it’s worth noting this is a 1/64 scale model from Hot Wheels that’s been reworked. The die‑cast base gives it weight and durability, while add‑ons like the big rear wing and front splitter are likely plastic — but they match the look of the real Nissan 35GT‑RR VER.2 well. The widebody silhouette is emphasized by dark bumper trims, black splitter edges and the white wheels. The panel gaps for the add‑ons are simplified to suit the scale, and the car is deliberately set very low to accentuate the LB‑Silhouette Works profile. The front lights are clear inserts and the taillights are red‑tinted. The tyre sidewalls with “ADVAN” lettering are another nod to track use typical of many 35GT‑RR builds. The paint is a light, warm grey and the stripes and decals are neatly applied. If you like dioramas, this fits well into workshop or track scenes with other 1/64 cars. One more time: since this is a custom mod, color, decals, ride height and wheels can differ from the standard Hot Wheels release — they’re Fred’s personal work.
