Alfa Romeo Giulia as the template for the Matchbox model

The photos from Modelly member “gpedett” show a four-door sports sedan that can clearly be identified as an Alfa Romeo Giulia by its triangular Scudetto grille, slim headlights, and compact notchback silhouette; an Alfa Romeo Tonale, on the other hand, would be an SUV with a taller body and five doors. So the miniature shown here is based on the current Alfa Romeo Giulia of the first generation (Tipo 952), which has been built since 2016. With it, Alfa Romeo returned to a classic rear-wheel-drive concept in the midsize sports sedan segment. Its direct predecessor was the Alfa Romeo 159, which was produced from 2005 to 2011. While the 159 was based on a platform with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the new Alfa Romeo Giulia got a longitudinal engine layout and rear-wheel drive as its technical foundation. The model car picks up on those proportions with a long hood, a cabin set far back, and a short rear end.

Technology of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Tipo 952

The production version of the Alfa Romeo Giulia uses the Giorgio platform, which was developed for balanced weight distribution and longitudinally mounted engines. Depending on the market and model year, gasoline and diesel engines with four cylinders were available; the output range for the regular versions went from about 136 to 280 horsepower. The top-spec Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio has a 2.9-liter (177.0-cubic-inch) twin-turbo V6 with 375 kW (510 hp), later in some versions 520 hp. This version uses rear-wheel drive, an eight-speed ZF automatic, an active torque-vectoring rear differential, and an active exhaust system. Other models could be fitted with the Q4 all-wheel-drive system, which mainly drives the rear wheels in normal driving and sends torque to the front axle when needed. The setup includes a double-wishbone front suspension and an Alfa-Link rear suspension. The hood, fenders, doors, and other parts are partly made of aluminum depending on the version; on the Quadrifoglio, carbon-fiber parts are used too. The slim lights and the central grille of the little model point to the front-end design of the Alfa Romeo Giulia, even though not every detail from the full-size car could be scaled down exactly.

Green 1/64 diecast miniature in gpedett’s collection

The vehicle is a model car in 1/64 scale, made by Matchbox. The miniature is built as a diecast model: the body is made of metal casting, while the chassis, wheels, glazing, and other attached parts are made of plastic. In the front, side, and rear three-quarter views, you can see four side-door body lines, dark-trimmed window frames, black wheel arch cladding, and a black lower sill area. The wheels have silver five-spoke rims with no clearly visible manufacturer logo; no specific rim brand or exact wheel model can be identified from this. At the front, the model has a black, triangular-framed grille with a small round badge area. Next to it are bright, three-part headlight elements. At the rear, there is a slim dark taillight graphic, a black diffuser area, and a darkly styled rear window. The model car in 1/64 scale, made by Matchbox, therefore shows the main identifying features of the Alfa Romeo Giulia in a fairly simplified version, as is typical for collector models.

Metallic green paint and visible shape details

The miniature comes in a rich metallic green paint finish. In the photos, you can see fine glitter particles in the paint, reflecting differently on the roof, hood, fenders, and doors. The color is broken up by the black windows, black tires, wheel arch trim, and the dark lower body section. Silver wheels and bright headlight inserts add more contrast. No lettering on the doors or rear, no racing numbers, no race logos, and no clearly readable Alfa Romeo badges are visible on this example. That keeps the focus on the body shape: especially the rising window line, the strongly sculpted rear fenders, the low roofline, and the short trunk lid are easy to make out in the photos. The visual effect of the model car comes from the contrast between the bright reflective green metallic surface and the black technical details. For a collection of Alfa Romeo Giulia miniatures, Matchbox models, or modern sedans in 1/64 scale, this example from “gpedett” shows the design language of the series in compact form.
