The Volkswagen T1, also known as the "Bulli" or "VW Bus", was first produced in 1950. Designed as a transporter, the Bus played a central role in post-war Germany and became globally popular in the late 1950s and 1960s, especially in North America. The Volkswagen T1 was developed by a team led by the emerging engineer Ben Pon, who significantly influenced the design of the Bulli. Ben Pon was a key figure who further developed the original idea and design into a successful production model. The Volkswagen T1 was known for its simple yet efficient construction and offered versatile use as both a utility vehicle and a people carrier.
The Volkswagen T1 had a boxer engine with a power output of 25 horsepower and a displacement of 1131 cm³ (69 cubic inches). This engine was noted for its economy and reliability, making the T1 attractive to small businesses and families. The rear-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive provided excellent traction and enabled the transport of heavy loads. The chassis was designed for a total weight of 1,865 kilograms (4,113 pounds). The Volkswagen T1 gained popularity due to its robustness and flexibility. Additionally, the iconic "V"-shaped front grille combined with the round Volkswagen emblem defined the distinctive appearance of the vehicle. Noteworthy features included the split windshield and the generous side windows, offering good visibility and enhancing the airy driving experience.
The model displayed is a 1/18 scale replica, meticulously crafted by Schuco using diecast material. It is a modified version and not the original product manufactured by Schuco. This model was customized by a member of the model car community, "modelltuner". The model showcases a detailed design that does justice to the original in many aspects. The striking, glossy green color of the model corresponds to the original marketing colors of the Persil campaign, demonstrating the creativity and skill of the model builder. Adorned with a retro advertising motif and the inscription "There is only one...", the model highlights the historical and cultural value of the Volkswagen T1.
The special customization of the model includes not only the color adaptation but also changes to the wheels. The model features sporty, chrome-shining rims that emphasize the dynamism and performance of the Volkswagen T1. Unfortunately, the manufacturer of the wheels cannot be clearly identified in the pictures. An interesting detail is the authentic license plate reading "D-HP 60", indicating the production year of 1960. The detailed replication of the headlights and taillights exemplifies high-quality model craftsmanship. Additionally, various scattered logos in the background of the workshop create a genuine workshop ambiance.
