Mini GT Porsche 911 Dakar 1/64: The Prototype and Where It Fits in the Model Range

The collectible shown here from Modelly member “modelmax” is clearly based on the Porsche 911 Dakar. This special edition is based on the 992 generation of the 911 series, which has been in production since 2019. Its direct predecessor was the 991. The Porsche 911 Dakar was introduced in 2022 and references Porsche’s historic rally background and the brand’s victory in the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1984. Technically, the Porsche 911 Dakar is quite different from a regular 911: it has more ground clearance, a height-adjustable suspension, special driving modes like Rally and Offroad, and all-wheel drive. The twin-turbo boxer engine with 3.0 liters of displacement delivers 480 hp, and power is sent through an 8-speed PDK transmission. The real car reaches 240 km/h (149 mph) and goes from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds. One of the people responsible for the 992 generation’s design was Michael Mauer at Porsche. This example here is a model car in 1/64 scale from Mini GT, and it clearly picks up the lines and proportions of the real thing.

Porsche 911 Dakar Tech: Suspension, Drivetrain, and Key Design Details

The Porsche 911 Dakar uses the basic architecture of the current 992, but it was tweaked in several ways for loose surfaces. Ground clearance in the standard setup is already higher than that of a Carrera with sports suspension, and it can be raised even more with the lift system. On top of that, the original comes with special Pirelli Scorpion all-terrain tires, reinforced body add-ons, red aluminum tow hooks, widened wheel arches, underbody protection parts, and a fixed rear spoiler. The body is based more closely on the 911 GTS, while all-wheel drive and the increased off-road ability define the car’s character. A lot of people see the Porsche 911 Dakar as a production-friendly interpretation of the ideas Porsche was already using in the 1970s and 1980s in long-distance rallies and desert events. The maker of the original is Porsche, and the 992 generation also brought in a lot of know-how from electronics, chassis control, and lightweight construction into the Dakar version. The miniature is a diecast model in 1/64 scale from Mini GT, and you can clearly see the metal body construction from the sharp body lines and the compact, solid feel of the material.

Motorsport Connection of the Porsche 911 Dakar: Historic Success and Famous Drivers

The Porsche 911 Dakar itself is a road-legal special edition, not a standalone race car for a regular championship. But its name and styling are directly tied to an important part of Porsche motorsport history. Especially important is the overall win at the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1984 with the Porsche 953. This car was driven by René Metge and Dominique Lemoyne, and it proved that the 911 concept could work outside of traditional circuit racing. There were also successes and entries with the 911 SC/RS and later with the all-wheel-drive 959 project in rally-raid competition. For collectors, that historical link matters a lot, because the Porsche 911 Dakar is not just a special edition of the 992 series, but also a tribute to a motorsport context that was pretty rare in Porsche’s lineup.

Rally Heritage, Paris-Dakar References, and Driver Connections in the 911 Lineup

Beyond desert rallies, the 911 lineup has had decades of motorsport success in endurance racing, GT series, and rally events. Names like Jacky Ickx, Walter Röhrl, Romain Dumas, and René Metge are linked to different 911 variants and off-road-style Porsche projects. Walter Röhrl in particular played an important role for Porsche as a test and development driver whenever chassis behavior and unusual vehicle setups were involved. The Porsche 911 Dakar takes that background and turns it into a modern production car with a very clear motorsport and rally reference. When placing the model in context, it’s important to note that the focus is not on race use of this exact road version, but on its connection to Porsche’s historic achievements in desert and endurance rallies.

Livery and Details of the Mini GT Model: 1/64 Diecast with Start Number 19

In the photos, the model has a white base color with a blue side band in the shoulder area and a thin green line below it. That color combo feels a lot like classic Porsche rally and factory-style liveries. The start number 19 is printed in black on the hood and doors. Along the lower side of the body, there’s a black PORSCHE script. On the hood, there’s a yellow sticker with the number 19 and references to Weissach and Dakar; there are also visible Shell sponsor logos at the front and small colored decals at the rear. The back shows the full-width light strip, the black rear spoiler, and a silver exhaust setup with the usual openings. You can also spot the dark-tinted windows, black wheels with a light outer rim, and the raised, rugged stance that suits the Porsche 911 Dakar. For collectors, the clean separation between white, blue, green, and black is especially nice, along with the accurate 992 shape, the round front headlights, the wide rear haunches, and the short front end. The model really captures the shape of the off-road 911 without piling on too many extra bits. That fits well with what many collectors want from a 1/64 model: a compact piece that still gives you both the car’s character and its historical background.
