BMW E30 as a base: touring car for road and racetrack
The miniature shown here from Modelly member “neophyte1410” is clearly based on the BMW 325i (E30) in a racing version with start number 64. The E30 was the 2nd generation of the BMW 3 Series and was built from 1982 to 1994. Its predecessor was the BMW E21, which launched the 3 Series lineup in 1975. The exterior of the E30 was developed under the direction of Claus Luthe, while several BMW development departments were involved in the body, chassis, and drivetrain; in this context, Boyke Boyer is often also mentioned for the interior. The BMW 325i (E30) was one of the best-known six-cylinder versions in the road car range. Under the hood sat the M20B25 inline-six with 2,494 cubic centimeters (152.0 cubic inches) of displacement and electronic fuel injection, delivering around 171 horsepower depending on the market. Typical E30 features included balanced weight distribution, MacPherson struts at the front axle, a semi-trailing arm rear suspension, and rear disc brakes on the stronger versions. This technical base made the BMW 325i (E30) interesting for touring car racing too, since the car was compact, durable, and fairly easy to tune.

In motorsport, the BMW 325i (E30) became a regular in national and international touring car and endurance racing series. Alongside the better-known M3, the 325i also showed up in production car and touring car classes, for example in 24-hour races, one-make series, and various national championships. Its inline-six offered a solid foundation for long-distance racing, and the straightforward E30 platform made it easier to work on suspension, brakes, and aerodynamics. Especially at the Nürburgring, the BMW 325i (E30) was used regularly over many years because the mix of compact bodywork, predictable handling, and tough mechanicals worked well on the Nordschleife.

Beyond individual cars, the BMW 325i (E30) is also closely linked to a number of well-known drivers who raced BMW touring cars in the 1980s and early 1990s. Names like Roberto Ravaglia, Johnny Cecotto, Steve Soper, Emanuele Pirro, and Altfrid Heger are strongly associated with the E30 era, even though the M3 was often the star in the top tier. On the car shown here, the names Markus Oestreich, O. Rensing, and W. Vogt are visible on the sides. That fits the character of the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, where multiple drivers share one car over a long distance. The model shown here is a 1/18 scale model car made by Pauls Modell Art / Minichamps. It is a diecast model and captures the clean racing look of the original very nicely, with a white base color and contrasting black race numbers. The number 64 is applied on the hood and doors, along with black window frames, the classic BMW kidney grille in chrome look, four round headlights, and a front bumper with integrated turn signals. The sponsor and team decals are especially noticeable: Pirelli appears on the front and fenders, Auto Budde is written across the windshield banner, Castrol can be seen in the lower front area, and heinzmann is printed along the side.
