The Mazda RX-7 was first introduced in 1978, marking the beginning of a new era of sports cars. The RX-7 succeeded the Mazda RX-3 and set new standards in terms of design and performance. This first generation, also known as SA22C or FB, was produced until 1985. The RX-7 was developed by the Japanese automaker Mazda to provide a lightweight, agile, and sporty alternative. The main designer responsible was Matasaburo Maeda, who was behind the elegant and aerodynamic shape. The most notable features of the RX-7 are its sporty look, pop-up headlights, and the robust rotary engine, a unique feature that has since become a signature of Mazda.

The first generation Mazda RX-7 (1978-1985) was equipped with a 12A rotary engine that produced 100 hp at 6000 rpm. The suspension comprised front MacPherson struts and a rear live axle with Watt linkage. The front brakes were ventilated discs, while the rear brakes were drums. In the 1980s, it often dominated the GTU class, helping Mazda establish itself as a reliable race car manufacturer.
