BMW 320 Gruppe 5 as a reference: generation, tech, and classification

This collectible piece from Modelly member “Phat-T” is based on the BMW 320 Turbo Gruppe 5 race car, which was built from the road-going E21 3 Series. The underlying model line was the 1st generation E21, produced from 1975 to 1983. The predecessor to the E21 was BMW’s 02 series, especially models like the 1602, 1802, and 2002, which had already played a big role for BMW in the sporty mid-size segment. The E21 design is often credited to Paul Bracq, while the technical development of BMW cars from this era was shaped by engineers like Klaus Luthe and other BMW development teams. In motorsport, though, the compact production car was turned into a heavily modified Group 5 racer with a much wider body, striking aero parts, and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Technical data of the BMW 320 Turbo Gruppe 5 and its motorsport base

The original BMW 320 Turbo Gruppe 5 used a turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine depending on the version, which came out of BMW’s Formula 2 and turbo development. The engine is often referred to as the M12/7, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a turbocharger. Output varied depending on setup, but it was well above 300 hp and could go even higher in certain race configurations. Typical features were rear-wheel drive, a manual racing transmission, heavily modified suspension, and the Group 5-style silhouette with flared fenders, a front spoiler, side skirts, and a big rear wing. The rules allowed major changes to aerodynamics and add-on parts as long as the base shape of the production car was still recognizable. That’s exactly what made this car such an important part of DRM and international touring car racing in the late 1970s. The model shown here is a diecast car in 1/18 scale, made by Minichamps, and it recreates this racing setup in compact form. You can clearly see the low stance, wide wheel arches, a single side-exit exhaust, and the race number 4 on the doors.

Motorsport success of the BMW 320 Turbo Gruppe 5 in DRM and international touring car racing

In motorsport, the BMW 320 Turbo Gruppe 5 became an important car in the Deutsche Rennsport-Meisterschaft and in other international series. BMW used this concept to compete against strong rivals from Ford, Porsche, and later other manufacturers. Thanks to its low weight, compact base, and powerful turbo engine, the car was competitive on many tracks. It was a major part of the DRM grid, in particular. Well-known drivers associated with different versions of the BMW 320 racing car include Harald Ertl, Manfred Winkelhock, Marc Surer, and Eddie Cheever. Also important in BMW Motorsport’s setup was Jochen Neerpasch, who played a key role in organizing and developing the racing program.

Drivers, livery, and Warsteiner design: prototype and miniature in detail

The BMW 320 Turbo Gruppe 5 also became especially well known for running in the typical sponsor liveries of the time. The model shown in the photos is based on a Warsteiner paint scheme with race number 4. On the original car, this kind of color scheme was a standard part of the visual identity in touring car racing during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The miniature shows a gold base color with black sections and stripes, plus white number panels on the doors. There are Warsteiner lettering and round Warsteiner Pilsener logos on the hood, doors, roof, rear side sections, and rear wing. You can also spot decals for GS-Tuning, Bosch, and Shell. The name Jörg Obermoser appears on the door, which points to a specific motorsport reference in historical context, since Jörg Obermoser was known as both a driver and constructor in German racing. The shape of the original car, with its boxy E21 cabin, low front spoiler, and large rear wing, comes across clearly in the miniature. The 1/18 scale model by Minichamps captures this livery really well, with its contrasts, logos, and panel layout.

1/18 Minichamps diecast model: details, proportions, and collector view

For collectors, it matters that this miniature is a diecast model. That means it follows the classic diecast construction style, where the body shape, edges, and add-on parts are presented in the usual display-model format. In the photos, you can see the multi-piece racing wheels in a BBS style, the wide tires, the dark window trim, the visible rivet strips on the plastic windows, and the pronounced overhang of the rear wing. The front end shows the flat Group 5 spoiler shape, while the side view highlights the stretched body and the clearly widened wheel arches. The paintwork looks clean and even; the black sections on the sills, front, and rear create sharp contrast against the gold body color. For model car collectors, the overall impression is also interesting: the miniature captures the sober motorsport look of the historic touring car with proportions that really stand out, especially the relationship between the body and the wheels and the visible racing modifications. From the side view in particular, you get a strong sense of the classic DRM style, without needing any extra explanation. In this setup, the late-1970s BMW touring car theme fits neatly into a display case.
