Series, designer and timeframe of the original

The model shown here in Modelly member “modelmax”’s collection is based on the Mercedes-Benz 300 CE Coupé W 124. The coupé version belongs to the W 124 (C124 Coupé) generation and was built from 1987 to 1996. The exterior was developed under Bruno Sacco; he gave it the clean lines, the low front, the crisp beltline and the signature frameless doors of the coupé. Peter Pfeiffer was also part of the design team and made important contributions from the late 1980s. The original, the Mercedes-Benz 300 CE Coupé W 124, succeeded the C123 coupé of the W123 series and positioned itself as a two-door, four-seater with a stiffer body, a distinct roofline and a slightly shortened B-pillar compared to the sedan. To place it in time: 1987 saw the INF Treaty, the “Black Monday” stock crash in October and U2 released “With or Without You” — just to give a feel for the era and how old the car is.

Technology and special features of the original

The Mercedes-Benz 300 CE Coupé W 124 was based on the W124 platform but used its own body parts and a slightly lower roofline. The heart was initially the inline-six M103 with a displacement of 2,962 cm³ (180.8 in³), single-point injection and a rated output of about 132 kW (180–188 PS) at 5,700/min. Typical transmissions were a five‑speed manual or a four‑speed automatic; later there was also a five‑speed automatic. From 1989 the 24‑valve 300 CE‑24 (M104) was added; in 1993 the naming switched to E‑Class and the coupé was updated to models like the 320 CE / E 320. The suspension used MacPherson struts up front with wishbones and a space‑efficient multi‑link rear axle, giving precise steering and good ride comfort. The drag coefficient (cW) was around 0.29, helped by a low hood, flush headlights and recessed wipers. Safety gear included ABS, from the early ’90s driver and passenger airbags and optional systems like ASD/ASR. The body was praised for corrosion resistance thanks to extensive galvanizing, and the crash structure was engineered with defined load paths. Dimensions of the Mercedes-Benz 300 CE Coupé W 124: length about 4.66 m (15.3 ft / 15 ft 3.5 in), width 1.74 m (5.71 ft / 5 ft 8.5 in), wheelbase 2.71 m (8.9 ft / 8 ft 10.7 in); depending on the engine the curb weight ranged roughly from 1,420 to 1,520 kg (3,131 to 3,351 lb). The fuel tank held 70 liters (18.5 US gallons). Brakes were discs all around, with ventilated discs at the front.

The 1/43 diecast model from Pauls Modell Art / Minichamps

The pictured model car is a collector piece in 1/43 scale and is produced by Pauls Modell Art / Minichamps. It’s a diecast model, so the body is made of cast metal — gives it a solid feel and accurate surface details. The miniature shows the Mercedes-Benz 300 CE Coupé W 124 in a burgundy metallic paint with a slightly darker lower side skirt, matching the two‑tone look common then. The paint has a fine metallic effect, crisp creases and a neatly applied chrome trim along the doors and sill. The front has the typical rectangular headlights with orange indicators and the ribbed grille. You can also spot the roofline, an indicated sunroof, the driver’s side mirror and a finely scaled rear antenna. Inside the cabin the seats, dash and door panels are in a matching burgundy tone; the wheel and center console are clearly modelled. The wheels are represented as cross‑spoke style rims; the exact supplier can’t be identified from the photos. Overall the miniature captures the W124 coupé’s lines well: frameless side glass, shortened B‑pillar look, emphasized C‑pillar and the characteristic hood height. The piece shown comes from Modelly member “modelmax” and is in good condition, with cleanly fitted parts and neatly mounted on its display base.

Collector notes, color details and variants

For collectors: this 1/43 model by Pauls Modell Art / Minichamps represents an early phase of the Mercedes-Benz 300 CE Coupé W 124, visible in the front styling before the later, softer bumped facelift. The model color matches a typical Mercedes metallic of the period; the dark lower skirts, black trim strip and chrome window surrounds are all period‑correct. The rear has the horizontal taillight texture and the neat trunk edge. The star in the grille, door handles, fuel cap and slim bumper lines are finely engraved. The model’s base is plastic while the body is diecast, so the gaps are convincing for this scale. There are no obvious tuning parts or movie/TV connections — it’s a stock representation. If you collect W124s, this sits nicely next to the sedan, wagon and cabrio to show the differences from pre‑facelift to facelift. The W123 coupé was the predecessor; key differences (more aerodynamic lines, more complex rear suspension and newer injection tech) are clear on the real car and are reflected in the model by the lower front, grouped lights and smooth flank. So yeah — it’s a solid, faithful 1/43 diecast from Pauls Modell Art / Minichamps, perfect for a period‑accurate Mercedes display.
