BMW X5 M of the E70 series – putting the original in context

The model shown here is based on the BMW X5 M from the second X5 generation, the E70. This M version was sold from 2009–2013 and was the first time BMW M offered a full-on high-performance SUV as a production car. Under the hood of the BMW X5 M sits the V8 biturbo S63 with 4.4 liters (about 1.16 US gallons) displacement, two twin-scroll turbochargers arranged in the V, and an output of 408 kW (555 PS) — roughly 547 hp. Peak torque is 680 Nm (about 502 lb-ft) available across a wide rev range. The engine is paired with a 6-speed M Sport automatic (M Steptronic) with a manual mode. The xDrive all-wheel drive is tuned to be rear-biased, and the power distribution is further aided by Dynamic-Performance-Control at the rear axle. Factory 0–100 km/h is around 4.7 seconds (0–62 mph). Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph); with the M Driver’s Package it was roughly 275 km/h (171 mph). The car is built on the E70 X5 platform — the previous X5 (E53) didn’t really have a full‑blown M model; the sportiest variant back then was the 4.8is. Development of the BMW X5 M was handled by BMW M GmbH under Albert Biermann, and the E70 styling comes from the era when Chris Bangle was BMW’s design boss. You’ll recognize it by big air intakes, a distinct front bumper, four tailpipes, and the M‑specific chassis tuning with adaptive dampers and big brakes (front discs 385 mm / 15.2 in, rear discs 345 mm / 13.6 in).

Modified 1/18 collector’s piece by Kyosho – heads-up for collectors

This shown model is part of collector “RiggsM”’s collection and is a 1/18 scale model made by Kyosho. Important for collectors: it’s a modified example and does not match Kyosho’s original factory release. Changes can include paint details, add‑ons, license plates, surface treatments or other refinements. This 1/18 scale Kyosho piece is based on a diecast core — so metal casting — which gives it realistic weight and solid body panels with clean panel gaps. The photos show a deep red with a clear coat shine, nicely detailed headlight reflectors, a finely engraved twin-kidney grille and the typical four-pipe exhaust finish of the BMW X5 M. Collectors looking for a factory-original Kyosho example should note this piece has been customized afterward and therefore differs from the stock configuration.

Design and color details – what the miniature shows

The real BMW X5 M differs from a regular X5 with M bumpers, bigger air intakes, wider side skirts and the four tailpipes. Those bits are clearly picked up on the miniature. The front shows vertical BMW kidneys with a chrome surround, twin headlights with visible projector lenses, and pronounced wheel arches with M‑style wheel proportions; the model has noticeably wider rear tires, matching the original’s rear‑biased AWD setup. At the back you get a roof spoiler, a near‑flush tailgate and the twin twin-exhaust tips. The paint looks like a dark metallic red that would be close to BMW shades such as “Melbourne Red metallic” or “Vermilion Red” — there’s no exact color code noted, but the finish is clean and even. The interior appears to be a light beige tone with a black dash area, which matches the common BMW contrast of light leather and dark trim. You’ll also notice custom plates reading “S • GO 190” — a typical sign of aftermarket personalization. The side silhouette captures the E70’s proportions well: high beltline, short overhangs. Overall the miniature follows the design logic of the E70 series.

Tech specs and tips for display

Factory X5 M cars commonly came on 20‑inch wheels (20 in) with staggered tires (front 275/40 R20, rear 315/35 R20). The brake setup uses vented discs and the chassis features active anti‑roll stabilization. Curb weight is about 2.4 tonnes (2,400 kilograms / 5,291 pounds), depending on equipment. Fuel is delivered by direct injection, and the cooling and charge‑air systems are built to handle sustained loads. The xDrive AWD uses an electronically controlled multi‑plate clutch, which together with the rear DPC helps keep the handling neutral. Of course, the model can’t reproduce those systems functionally, but it does mimic the exterior cues — you can see brake rotors behind the wheels and the big air intakes. There are no clear signs in the photos of a specific tuner or wheel brand, so we can’t ID any aftermarket maker for certain. The diecast build in the photos looks well fitted: panel gaps, door lines, window frames and inset taillights are tidy. For displaying it, use a dust‑free case — those dark meshes and glossy surfaces show dust easily. One last thing: this is a one‑off modified piece and not the original factory Kyosho release — good to know for collectors cataloging variants. For shelving, label it as “SUV, high‑performance, E70 series, model years 2009–2013” so it’s easy to place in a BMW M lineup.
