Technology and development of the Ford Mustang GT3 race car
The
Ford Mustang GT3 came out of a joint effort by Ford Performance and Multimatic Motorsports. The car was designed for racing series like IMSA, FIA WEC, and national GT3 championships. It uses a naturally aspirated 5.4-liter V8, with power adjusted depending on Balance of Performance, air restrictors, and the rules of each series. The sequential six-speed gearbox sits as a transaxle at the rear axle and helps with balanced weight distribution. Other technical features include racing ABS, traction control, a multi-link rear suspension, a FIA-spec safety cage, and a central air jack. The body has widened fenders, vents above the front wheel arches, a pronounced front splitter, and an adjustable rear wing. Larry Holt played an important role in the development at Multimatic, and the design carries over the S650 production shape while using regulated aero parts and lightweight materials.
Motorsport use of the Mustang GT3 and Nürburgring entry No. 63
The
Ford Mustang GT3 made its racing debut in 2024 at the 24 Hours of Daytona. Ford fielded the cars there with teams including Proton Competition and Multimatic. In the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, Mustang GT3 entries picked up podium finishes during their first season and led to a growing presence in the GTD-Pro and GTD classes. Drivers such as
Joey Hand,
Dirk Müller,
Mike Rockenfeller,
Christopher Mies, and
Frédéric Vervisch were among the well-known racers who drove the
Ford Mustang GT3 in international endurance events. In competition, the car faces models from other GT3 manufacturers; performance, minimum weight, and aerodynamics are controlled by Balance of Performance rules.
24h Nürburgring 2025: Haupt Racing Team Ford Mustang GT3
At the 2025 24-hour race on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the
Ford Mustang GT3 with number 63 was entered by Haupt Racing Team. The drivers
Hubert Haupt,
Patrick Assenheimer,
Dirk Müller, and
Vincent Kolb bring experience from GT3, VLN or NLS, and endurance racing programs. A Nürburgring 24h race is especially demanding because it combines the Nordschleife and Grand Prix circuit, changing weather conditions, traffic from different classes, and night driving, all of which challenge the car, team, and drivers. For Ford, the entry also mattered because the brand was once again more strongly represented on the Nordschleife with its current GT3 concept. The
Ford Mustang GT3 combines the familiar Mustang silhouette with an aero package, a wide track, and racing tires from Yokohama needed for the SP9/GT3 class.
Livery, decals, and details of the IXO diecast model
The photographed miniature copies the gray-and-white look of the No. 63 car. The front, hood, and front fenders are finished in a dark metallic gray, while the doors, rear side sections, and rear are mostly white. Yellow outline lines on the sides shape the silhouette of a galloping Mustang; additional white and black stripes run across the fenders, side skirts, and rear section. Yellow mirror caps, yellow elements on the end plates of the rear wing, and yellow accents on the front splitter add extra contrast. Visible sponsor decals include Ravenol, DEKRA, Yokohama, AutoArena.de, H&R, Falken, Ford Performance, and RWD. The 1/43 scale model car from IXO shows multi-spoke wheels with tire lettering, brake calipers, the shaped radiator opening, the large rear diffuser, and the tall wing. Especially from the three shown angles, the precise reproduction of the body lines, printed carbon-fiber textures, and clearly separated color areas creates a cohesive, clean overall impression for a 1/43 collection.
